Preliminary proteomic analysis of tobacco leaves affected by volatile organic compounds from floral scent of rose

ABSTRACT:

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play an important role in plant communication. Rose floral scent consists of many VOCs, such as aroma alcohols, esters and terpenes. It remains unclear if floral scent from rose can affect the growth of tobacco. In order to explore the tobacco response induced by rose floral scent, we performed the proteomic analysis on tobacco leaves influenced by floral scent from rose using two-dimensional electrophoresis. Protein profiles revealed that 470 ± 37 and 319 ± 18 protein spots were detected in sole tobacco and tobacco/rose intercropping samples, respectively. Compared with those of sole tobacco samples, 26 protein spots exhibited at least twofold change at the protein level, including six up-regulated and 20 down-regulated proteins. In addition, 20 proteins were identified by MALDI-TOF/OF MS analysis and database searches, and results showed that they were involved in the defense response, photosynthesis, protein catabolic process, regulation of stomata movement and electron transport.
